The upcoming UNCO12 conference asked for submissions of liturgies based on 2 Kings 2:23-25 today on Facebook. That’s the passage where the bears come out of the woods and maul the children taunting Elisha. Not a verse often heard in church.

Still, sometimes inspiration can come from pretty curious places. After sitting with the text for a moment, what I ended up writing seems oddly encouraging for our journey. Hopefully you find it that way too.

Lord, how you watch over your servant.

When I have come under attack, your vengeance against my enemies has been swift and clear. Those who insult your servant will feel your wrath.

But Lord, let us have the wisdom to know when to call for justice and when to show your grace.

For while you destroy our enemies, you also sent your Son that we may escape death.

Praise the Lord for all you have done for us. Amen.
